Unexpected Guests 2010
Unexpected Guests is a solo exhibition of work made in response to the artist's travels to the subtropical rainforest in Peru, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, and the galleries of Northern Europe in 2009.
The work seeks to reconcile the artist's experiences of living in these natural environments, with her contrasting domestic life in suburban Canberra.
Using a wide array of materials including gold leaf, patterned fabric, plywood and oil paint, these delicate and meticulous paintings pay tribute to the natural world and its wonders. Appropriating conventions from classical still-life painting, the work challenges notions of containment and 'stillness' in the still-life. The work also explores notions of value and suprise.
Exhibited at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka in 2010.
